The History of Valentine’s Day
Way back in ancient Rome, there was a guy named St. Valentine who had a big heart—literally and figuratively. The story goes that Emperor Claudius II thought single men made better soldiers, so he banned marriages. But our rebellious romantic, Valentine, secretly helped couples tie the knot. Sadly, he was caught and executed on—you guessed it—February 14. Talk about a dramatic love story!
But that’s not all! Some say Valentine’s Day also has roots in the wild Roman festival of Lupercalia, a mid-February party full of matchmaking and general mischief. Eventually, the church swapped this pagan fest for a more wholesome St. Valentine’s celebration.
So, why February 14th? Well, in 496 AD, Pope Gelasius I made it official, possibly to honor St. Valentine’s sacrifice. Plus, during the Middle Ages, people believed that birds started their love season in mid-Feb. If nature was getting all romantic, why shouldn’t we?
